We slowly approach the temple's sacred inner sanctum. At the third enclosure wall, we remove our shoes, and once inside the innermost precincts, we set aside our cameras; however, to actually enter the Nataraja shrine itself, one would have to be a priest! After it you drive to Gangaikonda Cholapuram. Here each stone tells a story, from the towering vimaana to the dwarabalakas and the sanctum’s Shivalinga. It is a place to appreciate history, architecture, and faith all at once. You can imagine the king standing proudly, overseeing his city and temple.

At our next stop in Kumbakonam, we once again delve into the mysteries of the Hindu cosmos. Here, too, it is Shiva to whom the city's most important temple is dedicated. We devote ample time to exploring the temple complex before continuing on to Tanjore, a historically significant center of Chola culture. The Chola dynasty was one of the longest-ruling dynasties in South India, renowned for its maritime conquests as well as its patronage of arts and architecture.
